Bloomberg Philanthropies today revealed the 21 European cities selected as final contenders in its 2013-2014 Mayors Challenge

Bloomberg Philanthropies today revealed the 21 European cities that have emerged as final contenders in its 2013-2014 Mayors Challenge, a competition to inspire cities to generate innovative ideas that solve major challenges and improve city life, and that ultimately can spread to other cities.

LSE Cities’ Ricky Burdett is on the panel that will select one grand prize winner will receive €5 million for the most creative and transferable idea. Four additional cities will be awarded €1 million, and all will be announced in the fall. The finalists’ proposed solutions address some of Europe’s most critical issue areas: youth unemployment, aging populations, civic engagement, economic development, environment and energy concerns, public health and safety, and making government more efficient.

Ricky Burdett at LSE’s Asia Forum in Kuala Lumpur

Ricky Burdett joined fellow LSE professors Craig Calhoun, Danny Quah, Sir Chris Pissarides, Tim Besley and Arne Westad in a Graduation Ceremony and one-day conference on Building Asian Futures organised as part of this year’s LSE Asia Forum held in Kuala Lumpur on 3 April 2014.

Burdett coordinated a session on ‘Cities and Urbanisation’, chaired by LSE Director Craig Calhoun, which included regional and local urban development experts focussing on the social and environmental challenges facing cities in South-East Asia.

LSE Cities World Urban Forum Session

LSE Cities convened a session on “Cities and the New Climate Economy: Infrastructure, Innovation and the Spatial Fix” at the World Urban Forum (WUF7) in Medellin, Colombia on 10 April 2014. Attended by a diverse group of urban practitioners, researchers and policy makers, the session was structured around ongoing work for the Global Commission on the Economy and Climate and the cities workstream of the Commission’s New Climate Economy (NCE) project which LSE Cities is leading.

Theatrum Mundi hosts CITY RELIGION CAPITALISM with the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin

In partnership with the Alfred Herrhausen Society and the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Theatrum Mundi hosted a public screening of new films by Alexander Kluge on cities, religion and capitalism, along with a post-film programme in Berlin. A group of early career scholars and practitioners met along side the public programme to discuss the themes emerging from the films and panel discussions.

LSE Cities’ Jonathan Silver presented at Southern African Cities Conference at WITS University in Johannesburg

Jonathan Silver has recently presented his emerging findings from research being conducted as part of the LSE Cities’ research project ‘Urban Uncertainty’ after fieldwork in Uganda late last year. Presenting at the Southern African Cities Conference at WITS University in Johannesburg and at the Faculty of Built Environment, Uganda Martyrs University, provided the opportunity to engage scholars and professionals in debates about carbon financing of infrastructures.

Full details have been announced for the LSE Cities World Urban Forum Session: Cities and the New Climate Economy: Infrastructure, Innovation and the Spatial Fix which takes place on Thursday 10 April 2014, 16.00 to 18.00 (COT Medellin time) in the Green Pavilion, Agora Room at the World Urban Forum.

This session is structured around ongoing research for the Global Commission on the Economy and Climate and the cities workstream of the Commission’s New Climate Economy (NCE) project which LSE Cities is leading. The overall aim of NCE is to provide independent and authoritative evidence on the relationship between actions which can strengthen economic performance and those which reduce the risk of dangerous climate change.
