Several participants of LSE Cities’ Executive MSc in Cities from a broad range of professional sectors and disciplines met in Johannesburg in April with other LSE alumni and colleagues with an interest in cities. Meeting in Newtown, an inner-city area undergoing redevelopment, the intention was to establish an informal community of interest to deepen and share learning from the executive programme, particularly multi-disciplinary thinking and problem-solving using an evidence-based approach. This meetup focused on understanding why imported solutions, including big public and private investments in poorer areas and the rolling out of bus rapid transit didn’t necessarily achieve the anticipated impact in South Africa’s economic hub. A meeting in May discussed innovation in municipal finance. If you would like to receive information about future meetings in Johannesburg, please contact Sharon Lewis (EMC candidate, 2019).
