European Metromonitor: Showing the impact of the financial crisis in Europe

Today LSE Cities launches a new free online resource, supported by the Higher Education Innovation Fund, which shows the impact of economic recession and recovery in over 150 of Europe’s largest metropolitan areas.

Drawing on forecasting data previously unavailable to the public, the European Metromonitor features an interactive map, offering users the chance to browse data visualisations showing how the financial crisis has affected European cities.

The European Metromonitor, currently in Beta mode, will be developed in the coming months to include expert commentaries and city-level case studies. The website will also allow public, private and third sector stakeholders to interact with the platform to share their local perspectives on the impact of the current economic recession.

By providing this resource, which will be complemented by a series of workshops throughout 2013 and 2014, culminating in a Cities and the Crisis Symposium in June 2014, the European Metromonitor aims to fill knowledge gaps on the impact the current crisis is having on cities, and to provide a valuable bank of knowledge which can be used by academics, researchers, policymakers and the press.

It will encourage pioneering approaches, link with emerging concepts in urban research, and draw on alternative interpretations of the effect of the crisis in city regions from a practice and policy perspective. Through web-based open access technology, the project will allow a wide range of stakeholders to contribute their experiences and perspectives on the impacts of the crisis.
